A subscriber sent me a picture of chicken coops for sale at a Costco in Silicon Valley, in the suburbs south of San Francisco, saying he never thought he would see such a thing.
Indeed, there is a whole movement under way across the country as ever more urban and suburban dwellers begin to take up edible landscapes and gardening.
The demand for healthy food is growing. Indeed, organic food is the fastest growing segment in the food industry. Prices are rising. There are greater rises ahead.
The economics of healthy food just got another nudge from the federal government. The ultimate message of Obamacare is that we can not afford to get sick. For many of us it is more economic to buy organic food than buy health insurance from a system that lacks integrity.
The folks at Costco are smart. They are giving the consumer what they want. They see what is coming.
As the IPOs continue in Silicon Valley, don’t be surprised to see the techies importing farmers to tend their estates and ensure that their children are healthy.
