Farmers, Seed Sellers Sue Monsanto

The Public Patent Foundation, on behalf of 60 family farmers, seed businesses and organic agricultural organizations, sued Monsanto Co. on Tuesday to challenge the Creve Coeur-based agricultural giant’s patents on genetically modified seeds.

The plaintiffs said they sued preemptively to protect themselves from being accused of patent infringement should their crops or land ever become inadvertently contaminated with Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds.

The suit, which was filed in federal district court in Manhattan, represent family farmers, small businesses and organizations from within the organic agriculture community who say they are “increasingly threatened by genetically modified seed contamination despite using their best efforts to avoid it.”
