BP acknowledged last night that its latest attempt to plug the leaking Gulf of Mexico oil well had failed.
The admission that the risky “top kill” plan to block the flow of oil with heavy mud-like drilling residue had not been successful was a new blow to the prestige of the company and its chief executive, Tony Hayward.
