On Sunday, I was a tourist, leaving Lisbon to meet a wonderful group of Portuguese, Swiss and German friends in Cascais and Sintra.

We went on a tour of the elaborate gardens of the Palacio da Regaleira. This included walking down the spiral staircase of the Well of Initiation to a stone floor made with a beautiful windrose with a Templar cross, that passes out through a waterfall and crosses a small lake with stepping stones.

Perhaps the past was not so different – mansions financed by profits from the emerging markets.

I left San Francisco to fly to Portugal last Friday. With Apple’s market cap approaching that of the combined market cap of companies in Portugal, Spain and Greece, the angels of tangible value were whispering to head in this direction.
