Understanding "how the money works" in the drug trade, the war on drugs and in the prison system is not something you will learn at the Wharton Business School, at your Navy recruitment office, or listening to "Wall Street Week." Yet mapping the flows of narco dollars in our lives is marvelously useful for seeing our addictions to the financial system that is draining us all – whether we are parent, farmer, business owner, investor, activist, worker, or citizen.

In Memory of Gary Webb (1955–2004)

"In August 1996 Gary Webb stunned the world with a series of articles in the San Jose Mercury News reporting the results of his yearlong investigation into the roots of the crack cocaine epidemic in America. The series, titled "Dark Alliance," reveals that for the better part of a decade, a Bay Area drug ring sold tons of cocaine to Los Angeles street gangs, funneling millions in drug profits to the CIA-backed Nicaraguan Contras."

His series was soon revoked by the editors of SJMN(!), but he went on to publish a comprehensive book of the same title, and worked tirelessly for transparency and accountability until his death in December 2004, allegedly by his own hand. See Catherine's prayer for Gary Webb.
